Arturo Cuenca was one of Cuba's most important artists. He developed his practice in Cuba, winning prizes for engraving, photography, and installation before moving to Mexico in 1989 and to the United States in 1991. His work fuses photography with painting, evoking personal themes of exile, loss, and death. He has exhibited widely nationally and internationally, with works held in permanent collections including the Art Space Gallery (Rotterdam), the Museo de Arte Moderno (Caracas), the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Havana).
